My family and I spend a great amount of time on the go and in the summer we enjoy camping together. One of my all time favorite treats to pack for long car rides and busy afternoons is my husband’s grandmother’s baked honey granola recipe. I don’t like to fill my kids up on wasteful snacks that contain a ton of sugar. Grandma Carolyn makes her recipe with a few things my family doesn’t like, so I took the basic foundation from her recipe and added a couple of things we like instead. This simple baked honey granola recipe is a great trade, the kids can have a snack and it is actually good for them, too!
How To Make Baked Honey Granola
First, you will want to have a large bowl and fill it with 5 cups of old fashion oats. Next, you will want to crush 2 cups of plain Special K Cereal and add it to the mixing bowl of oats. After that you will want to add in 1 Teaspoon of Cinnamon, 1 Tablespoon of Flaxseed and 2 Tablespoons of Wheat Germ. Mix it all together.

Now that the first steps are finished, set aside your large mixing bowl. The next step is to heat ½ cup oil (I used Olive, but Grandma uses Sunflower oil) and a ½ cup of honey on the stove. I would suggest using a high graded honey to give your honey granola the best flavor. In this recipe I used an organic honey from Trader Joe’s.
Take the honey and oil off the heat once you see it starting to foam bubbles.
My Kids Love Helping In The Kitchen
Carefully, pour the honey sauce into the large bowl of oats. Mix well, then spread the granola onto a flat cookie sheet.
Bake in the oven at 300* for 40-50 minutes, making sure to stir every 10 minutes.
Try Dried Apples In Your Granola
You can add in any type of dried fruit once the granola has cooled (I like to add mini chocolate chips too!). Baked honey granola is easy to store and keeps well in an air tight storage container.
It Makes For A Great Gift To Give
I hope you get a chance to make this simple baked honey granola recipe for your next road trip. Of course, you don’t have to go anywhere to appreciate homemade granola, it tastes just as good at home, too.
