Set on the shores of the 2.5-mile long titular lake, this state park campground is a paradise for swimming, fishing, and boating. Then there’s the miles of surrounding hiking trails if you need to stretch your legs. And that’s to mention that Patagonia is one of the best places in the United States for birdwatching.
As for the campground itself, Patagonia Lake State Park is set up for RV camping, although tent campers are welcome (cabin rentals are also available). Boondocking is a term used to describe RV camping without utility hookups. Although dry camping in a campground without utilities is technically boondocking, it most often refers to primitive camping or dispersed camping in an area without established campsites or amenities. - Loy Butte Road – Located in Coconino National Forest near Sedona, this quiet free campground is perfect for RV camping. It’s surrounded by beautiful red rock formations and has plenty of space to spread out. The only catch is that the dirt road in can be rough, especially after heavy rains, so scout ahead before attempting to drive an RV in.
- Saddle Mountain – Just minutes from the town of Tonopah, this BLM area boasts some of the finest dry camping in Arizona. The absolutely gorgeous landscape coupled with the combination of privacy and convenient location make it hard to beat. Most RVs can easily make the drive in, although the road can be rough after it rains.
- Indian Bread Rocks – Another BLM campground, Indian Bread Rocks is conveniently located near the town of Wilcox, east of Tucson almost to the New Mexico border. A variety of undeveloped sites are available. Most are quite flat and large enough for the largest RVs. The area is remote and is surrounded by interesting rock formations. Like most Arizona dispersed camping areas, the access road is often rough.
- Dome Rock Mountain – One of many RV campgrounds near Quartzsite (a popular winter RV destination), this BLM campground is suitable for RVs of all sizes. It boasts several different campsites, some more private than others. Shade trees are available near some sites. The titular Dome Rock is visible in the distance.
- Kofa National Wildlife Refuge – Between Quartzsite and Yuma, this national wildlife refuge boasts excellent free RV camping in addition to a range of other recreation opportunities. All camping is dispersed and primitive. All sizes of RVs are welcome, although many spots are not very level. The surrounding landscape is very rugged and wild with dramatic mountains visible in the distance.
