Since the late 1990s, Ebikes have risen in popularity among both casual and seasoned biking enthusiasts. Many people even love taking them on camping trips. Since you’re out in the middle of nowhere, however, the challenge is knowing how to charge an Ebike while camping.

Luckily, experienced campers have found several solutions to this problem, which we’ll gladly share with you!

Options for Charging an Ebike While Camping

Solar Panels

Spending time outside gives you plenty of access to sunlight. Why not use it as a way to charge an Ebike? Solar panels are wonderful at that. You only need a single 100-watt panel to charge a solar battery, though you’d need more panels and/or higher wattage to shave a few hours off your wait time. Either way, you may have to set aside roughly a day per charging session.

Portable Generator/Station

Whether you opt for solar, electric, or gas-powered, the beauty of a portable generator is that it’s powerful but compact enough to transport easily. Also known as a power station or power bank, a portable generator is like carrying energy in your hands, making it a dependable way to charge an Ebike while camping.

Of course, we’d recommend electric- or solar-powered generators and stations, if possible; they have a smaller environmental impact than gas. In any case, remember to charge your station or bank at home and/or in public buildings close to your campsite so that there’s always an adequate amount of power to transfer to your Ebike.

Car Battery

Most campers reach their sites by driving with a car, truck, RV, or motorhome. As long as you don’t mind letting your vehicle run for a few hours, connecting the cord directly to the battery or cigarette lighter socket is one of the easiest ways to charge an Ebike while camping. However, go with only a partial charge if your vehicle’s battery is old and doesn’t have much juice left.

Charging Station

Lots of campsites have considered how to charge an Ebike, which is one reason why many of them come with charging stations. If you’re renting a site, use the station liberally. Also, keep in mind that some hiking and biking trails boast the occasional charging station, so as an extra precaution, try to choose trails where you’ll find them.

Public Outlets

If you ride your Ebike out of your camping site and into a nearby town or city, you may come upon a building where you’d be allowed to borrow an outlet. Most likely, it would be a store, restaurant, hotel, or library. Even if you have other ways to charge your Ebike while camping, it can’t hurt to stop at one of these places if you’re already in the vicinity, just to top off your charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should you bring to charge your Ebike?

Knowing how to charge your Ebike can only do you so much good if you don’t have the right supplies. In addition to the power sources we’ve described above, include the following items in your packing list:

Inverter

Capable of converting DC electricity to AC, an inverter is crucial if your preferred way to charge an Ebike is by transferring energy from a vehicle battery. It makes sure that you’re getting the right voltage for your Ebike; it’s different from what a vehicle needs. You would also need an inverter to set up solar panels.

Extension Cords

Ever wondered how to charge an Ebike with short cords? Bring extension cords so that you can avoid having to answer that question. That way, you’ll never have trouble reaching whatever port or outlet you need.

Another Battery

It’s possible that an emergency situation will arise that won’t give you time to figure out how to charge an Ebike in the middle of nowhere. Alternatively, to increase your efficiency and bike uninterrupted, maybe you’d like to switch out one battery for another regularly, using a full one while allowing a depleted one to recharge. Either way, consider bringing a spare battery or two.

Pannier Bag

Whether you take one battery or multiple, you need a reliable place to store them. Many campers who use Ebikes swear by pannier bags. Not only do they keep batteries safe, but you can keep them on the bikes without affecting the wheels. You could ride anywhere you’d like with the peace of mind that comes with having another battery constantly on hand.

How do you know the amount of power you need?

The typical Ebike requires between 30v and 52v of electricity to be completely charged. Receiving more voltage than that could actually damage the battery. Though most Ebike chargers are designed to automatically stop receiving voltage once the battery is full, keep an eye on its progress so that you can unplug it at the right time and reduce risk.

If you’re not sure about your Ebike’s voltage capacity, check the manual or attach a voltmeter to the battery to check before going on your camping trip.

Does anything bad happen if your Ebike is not charged?

A depleted battery has a tough time powering an Ebike, so its performance will likely suffer in trying to make up for the energy it lacks. This could lead to other problems, like premature wear or damage to the battery itself.

Plus, although you can still manually operate an Ebike that has lost its juice, you might have less fun or find your trip more laborious than expected.

Consider these more reasons to know how to charge an Ebike while camping.

How can weather affect your Ebike’s charging requirements?

Cold weather, hot weather, and rough terrain can all place strain on your Ebike’s battery. All these ways to charge an Ebike are more effective in areas that are sheltered from wind, extreme temperatures, and precipitation. Prioritize campsites with dry and warm areas like that.
