Ozark Trail Rechargeable Lantern Review

Ozark Trail Rechargeable Lantern

The Ozark Trail Rechargeable 700 lumen led lantern is a cheap entry level car-camping lantern that is perfect for new campers, kids, or anyone on a budget.

In my opinion, Ozark Trail is an often over-looked brand in the outdoor industry. They actually make some pretty decent gear at some of the best prices you’ll find.

If you’re on a budget or unsure if this whole camping thing is for you and you don’t want to spend a fortune to find out, then the Ozark Trail Rechargeable Lantern is the perfect lantern for you.

Pros

The biggest pro of the Ozark Trail Rechargeable LED Lantern is its price point. You actually get a solid and bright camping lantern for a low price. If you’re on a budget, this is definitely a great choice.

The Ozark Trail lantern also has the longest battery life on low of any of the rechargeable lanterns that we have reviewed. This is because on dim, the lantern only puts out 11 lumens of light. While this seems awfully low, it actually is great for a just enough light around the campground to see where you’re going and have a late supper. Especially great if there is a fire ban where you’re camping.

Cons

The Ozark Trail rechargeable lantern doesn’t have a lot of cons, but when compare with some of the other lanterns we’ve reviewed, there are a few items I’d like to point out.

First off, it’s not a small or light lantern. While not overly large or heavy, it’s also something I wouldn’t want to pack for a backpacking trip or canoe camping.

It also cannot charge your devices. While not a deal breaker, it is nice to have a lantern that can also charge your phone in case of emergency.

Lastly, there is no emergency light feature and the lantern doesn’t offer multiple light colors. An emergency light is always a nice feature and blue light is great for over dilated eyes in the middle of the night.

Editor’s Opinion

Personally, I think the Ozark Trail rechargeable lantern is perfect for car campers, especially those new to camping. When you’re car camping, you’re not too worried about size and weight. So this lantern is perfect. WIth its long batter life and bright 700 lumens, you can easily light up your whole campsite while staying at one of our national parks.

About The Ozark Trail Rechargeable LED Lantern

Ozark Trail

Brightness

The Ozark Trail Rechargeable Lantern has plenty of brightness at 700 Lumens on high setting. This is more than adequate for a good campsite lantern or for completely illuminating your tent in the evening.

On it’s medium setting you’ll get 129 lumens of light and on low you’ll get 11 lumens.

129 and 11 lumens both sound low, but when you’re in the dark in the woods (or at a nice campground), 129 and 11 lumens actually provides you with a surprisingly good amount of light.

I actually found myself using the 129 and 11 lumen settings far more than using the lantern on full brightness at 700 lumens. 700 is extremely bright at night!

Battery Life

This is where I believe the Ozark Trail rechargeable lantern really shines. At its brightest setting, which is 700 lumens, you’ll get 4 hours out of the battery. Not great, but on par with most rechargeable lanterns.

At medium and low settings (29 and 11 lumens) you’ll get some great battery life. At the medium setting, which is 129 lumens, you’ll get 21 hours of battery life. At the lowest setting, 11 lumens, you’ll get 275 hours of battery time. The lowest setting is great to keep an area of your camp lit up in the evening without worry about running out of battery power.

Battery / Charging

The Ozark Trail Rechargeable Lantern is built with a 3.7v Litium-ion that is chargeable with the included USB cord. There is no solar charging available on this lantern, but that is what I would expect at this price point.

You can charge up the lantern with a solar charger, but more than likely if you keep the light on one of its lower settings, you won’t need to recharge the lantern during your camping trip.

Weight / Size

Weighing in a 1.6 lbs and a size of 9″ tall x 4.25″ wide, the Ozark Trail rechargeable lantern isn’t too heavy to be a problem. It also isn’t too big to pack for most camping trips. It shouldn’t be a problem to pack in any car or to hike in a small distance to your campground.

However, on a large backpacking trip or if you need to do a lot of portaging (like we do in the BWCA), then every ounce counts and space is extremely limited. If that is your style of camping, I would pass on this particular lantern.

Durability

When examining the Ozark Trail rechargeable lantern, you won’t notice anything that makes you think it is necessarily built cheap. Everything seems good and I have had zero problems with my lantern.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a tank and I wouldn’t throw it around, but it doesn’t feel cheap (even with its low price).

Features

Ozark Trail Rechargeable Lantern - Storage Compartment
Storage compartment on the bottom of the lantern.

This Ozark Trail rechargeable lantern doesn’t boast many features, rather it is a simple entry level rechargeable lantern.

A small compartment on the bottom of the lantern holds your charging cable which is nice (I lose my constantly).

You’ll find high, medium, and low settings and that is it for operation.

A metal handle at the top of the lantern wraps it up. The handle is great for carrying or hanging it in your tent or from a tree.

Ease of Use

The Ozark Trail is as simple as it gets to use. Simply press the button once for high, again for medium, again for low, and a fourth time to turn it off.

There is charging port on the back of the lantern for easy charging.

Overall Value

In my opinion, the Ozark Trail brand in general gets an undeserved bad rap. They make some really solid gear at incredibly cheap prices. I think you get better products at better prices than Coleman. If you are new to camping or on a tight budget, you can get an Ozark Trail tent, sleeping bag, and backpack and still be under $150, leaving you more money to invest in your camp kitchen, lantern, and other supplies.

So, I think that the Ozark Trail rechargeable lantern offers great value for the price point of $33.46.

Final Opinion

Ozark Trail offers a good rechargeable lantern at a great price, making it an attractive option for a lot of campers.

My lantern will be a mainstay of our car camping and RV camping trips for years to come.
