If you’re anything like me, you like to be prepared on a camping trip, packing fishing rods, dry wood for the fire, extra food, blankets, and more. Often on trips our seven-seater SUV gets cramped very quickly and makes for a difficult camping trip.
This last month we were able to test out a SPACE Trailer that that opened a lot of possibilities to change our camping game. This do-it-all camping utility trailer is light enough to be towed by any car, has more room than a full-sized pickup bed, can haul all your kayaks and bikes, and will keep your car nice and roomy for the kids and dogs while barely decreasing your fuel consumption! Keep reading to learn more about my experience with this trailer!

Cargo Capacity
What surprised me most about this trailer was just the sheer amount of space you have inside. I loaded up all the gear I normally bring with for an overnight trip and didn’t even fill up 10% of the room available.
The bed of the trailer is four feet wide by seven feet long, and the pop-up canopy gives two and a half feet of clearance upwards. My calculations say there’s about 70 square feet of space, which pretty much doubles what I had in my SUV with all the seats laid down. Being able to keep all your gear in the trailer separate from your vehicle makes for a much tidier trip and overall camping experience.
Tie down rings in the bed allow you to secure any heavier gear to keep it from sliding around or bouncing on a particularly rough trailer. This elastic cargo net is probably the easiest way to keep your cargo secure since it can just wrap over everything at once.
Camping Accessories
SPACE Trailers let you completely customize your trailer add-ons, so you get exactly what you want for your camping needs. I picked a two bike racks and a rooftop tent for mine, and there was still enough space on the bars to add an awning for some nice shade and weather protection as well as another bike or kayak rack.
For any camping I do this summer, the bike racks are coming off to make space to mount a canoe, I’ll keep the rooftop tent on, and add on the pull-out awning as well. I also received the HighRider version of the trailer that sits 19” off the ground, and it was a little high for my hitch.
It’s easy to just to flip your leaf springs to make the trailer sit lower, or there is a LowRider version of the trailer available that sits at 15” above the ground.
Handling and Efficiency
The SPACE Trailer pulled incredibly quietly and smoothly with the 15-inch tire option I received and handled great while cruising down the freeway at 75mph.
Accelerating and braking felt the same as normal, since the lightweight construction of the trailer means you’re only adding another 600 pounds to your car.
Overall, towing the trailer is no different than driving with several adults in the car. The beauty about this camping trailer is that you can still fit it anywhere you can take your vehicle, whether that be a mountain trail, tunnel through the trees, or in my case a McDonald’s drive-thru!
Price is a big factor of our camping trips, and I’m always watching the dash to see what my fuel economy is. You can expect a couple miles per gallon decrease when towing this trailer. My fuel economy already decreases from about 20mpg to 18mpg just by mounting the rooftop tent on my SUV, so being able to haul whole entire trailer and get the same fuel economy decrease is much appreciated and can be partially attributed to the streamlined design of the top of the trailer.

Tongue Length
Starting at the front of the trailer, there are three different tongue lengths you can select. My trailer had the longest length (6 ½ feet long) which gave me the ability to haul a 22-foot canoe around without bumping into my car.
Hitch
The hitch is a standard 2” ball hitch, that has the most common 4 inch trailer light plug. Right behind the hitch there’s a jack on wheels making it easy to push the trailer wherever you want it when it’s unhooked from the vehicle.
Stabilizing Jacks
SPACE Trailers included stabilizing jacks that you can pull out and prop up the back of the trailer against the ground with. Stabilizing jacks are a must have on any camping trailer and provide a stable mounting point for your rooftop tent. They let you get it nice and level as well (No more sleeping at an angle!)
Weatherproof Canopy
The black canopy lifts up along with any gear you have strapped to the top, and has a heavy duty prop to make sure it won’t fall down on you. There’s a beefy rubber weather strip as well to keep everything inside dry.
Hinges and Locks
The hinges on the trailer are made of heavy duty stainless steel, so you won’t need to worry about accidentally slamming something down on the gate of the trailer. There’s also tie down on the back of the trailer for keeping anything on the rooftop bars secure.
The two latches that secure the canopy are held in place with a carabiner that is held in place by a thin wire when not in use. The holes in the latch are large enough to fit any standard padlock to keep your gear secure when you’re out on a hike or running into town quick.
Frame
The frame on the SPACE Trailer is made of heavy duty, galvanized steel, which is extremely rust resistant. If you look closely at the picture below, the end of the tongue of the trailer is secured by a bolt. You can actually take one of these bolts off and rotate the tongue underneath the trailer to store it vertically in your garage or shop. It’s easy to see just how rust resistant the frame is by comparing the picture above to the picture below of the leaf springs and mounting bolts that have some light surface rust on them.
Trailer Tailgate
The tail of the trailer also folds down in a pickup style fashion, great for sliding heavier objects like firewood in and out. Inside the trailer, there’s a nifty handle that locks the tailgate into place, and a stranded wire to keep it level with the bed. All of these metal surfaces are painted with a glossy metal paint that seems pretty ding and scratch resistant.
Other Uses
Another thing that stands out about the SPACE Trailer is that if you take the top canopy off the trailer, you have a full-sized utility trailer. While I enjoy camping, I only go a handful of times a year, and having a multipurpose trailer that I can use year-round makes the purchase much more worth it. The fold-down tailgate and rear stabilizing jacks are both useful features for a utility trailer as well, with a few ramps you can easily load up an ATV or lawnmower in the bed.
Price
If you’re looking to buy a SPACE Trailer, they start off at $5,000 for their base model and accessories such as a bike carrier range from an additional $250 to a complete rooftop tent for $2,000. The $5,000 price point is what most camping or overlanding trailers tend to start at, making this trailer very well-priced for the quality and features you’re getting. Every SPACE Trailer also ships with a one-year warranty which allows for some peace of mind.
Final Thoughts
If you enjoy tent camping or car camping, the possibilities and ease of camping with this trailer makes it a very enticing purchase. I certainly wish I had this trailer for last year’s camping to haul along my bikes, paddleboards, and rooftop tent to get out and enjoy the lovely lakes and scenery better. Since the SPACE Trailer can be towed by even the smallest of cars eliminating the need for a truck or full-sized SUV, this opens the doors for many people to get out and camp and save some money while doing so.
If you’re in the market for a camping trailer, this is a good one! For more information, check out the SPACE Trailer website!
